April / May 2022 proved a spectacular show of bluebells and wild garlic in The Doward woods above the River Wye at Symonds Yat.
I am lucky enough to live on the borders between England and Wales and the border of the Forest of Dean and the Wye Valley. Here are just some of the local views.
One of the best views bathed in late evening light across the valley towards Monmouth.
One of my favourite outlooks across to the back mountains with Sugarloaf and Skirrid in the background.
One of those early evening, low sunlight images from May 2017.
Just down the road from the Tree at Lydart views is this view down towards Monmouth. With snow onto hills in the background and cars on the road catching the last of the late afternoon light.
The Wye Valley between Ross on Wye and Monmouth is blessed in many ways. For the visitor there are a number of cone hire companies that offer half day / day or longer trips along the Wye. For hikers there is the Peregrine Trail along the old Railway line between Symonds Yat and Monmouth. For bird watchers there are Peregrine Falcons that can be seen from Yat Rock etc etc etc……….
Autumnal sunlight creeping through the trees.
Working away most weeks has its advantages. Time to walk the streets of London indulging in my passion - uninterrupted apart from giving directions to tourists . Trying to not take the iconic obvious images but very seldom succeeding!
After many years of not managing to take the bluebells. One of the benefits of lockdown was the opportunity to get out in the evenings and take the bluebells in the fading light.
Bluebells providing a carpet below the vine covered trees.
The display really was amazing this year.
Bluebells enjoying the last of the sunlight.
A weird thing ‘lockdown’. Normally people travel to our part of the country on the England, Wales borders to take holidays and enjoy the wonderful scenery.
During lockdown I have been fortunate enough to still carry on my normal employment but from home. This means despite being at home I have returned to my nocturnal habits of taking night scape images.
Here are four images from roughly the same location but showing fundamentally different events during lockdown. The first pre lockdown showing a sunset over Monmouth, the nightlights, comet Neowise and the lightning storms of August 2020.
A family trip to Scotland in the summer presents a great opportunity to sneak in some photography.
A combination of a western outlook for sunsets, a coastal location and late evening sundown times makes for a perfect combination.
If only the sun would shine and the midges would take a day off.
